Climate Change Induced Coastline Change Adjacent to Small Tidal Inlets

چکیده

The many thousands of small tidal inlets (STIs), and their adjacent coastlines, are almost certain to be affected by climate change in multiple ways, due behaviour being closely linked both oceanic terrestrial drivers such as riverflow, sea level, ocean waves, all which projected over the 21 st century. Development risk informed adaptation strategies for these highly utilized inhabited inlet-interrupted coast zones requires projections alongshore average coastline recession variability position along under future forcing conditions, latter an aspect that has not received much attention date. Here, a combination process-based morphodynamic model ( Delft3D ) reduced complexity SMIC ), concurrently forced with tides, riverflows, level rise, is used investigate phenomena at STI-interrupted coasts. models here applied schematised conditions representing two systems Sri Lanka, three main Types STIs: Negombo lagoon – permanently open, locationally stable inlet (Type 1), Kalutara migrating 2). Results indicate that, high emissions scenario following RCP 8.5, end-century, Type 1 STI may experience large 200 m, up twice present. 2 about 120 75% increase relative Thus, greater STI, compared STI. These findings highlight importance accounting changes when assessing coastal hazards on coasts adequately inform strategies.

ASSESSING CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS ON THE STABILITY OF SMALL TIDAL INLETS: Part 2- DATA RICH ENVIRONMENTS.

Climate change (CC) is likely to affect the thousands of bar-built or barrier estuaries (here referred to as Small tidal inlets - STIs) around the world. Any such CC impacts on the stability of STIs, which governs the dynamics of STIs as well as that of the inlet-adjacent coastline, can result in significant socio-economic consequences due to the heavy human utilisation of these systems and the...

CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS ON THE STABILITY OF SMALL TIDAL INLETS: A numerical modelling study using the Realistic Analogue approach

Tidal inlets are of great societal importance as they are often associated with ports and harbours, industry, tourism, recreation and prime waterfront real estate. Their behaviour is governed by the delicate balance of oceanic processes (tides, waves and mean sea level), and fluvial/estuarine processes (riverflow and heat fluxes), all of which can be significantly affected by climate change (CC...

Social vulnerability of small scale coastal fisher's livelihood to climate change

Fisheries support livelihood of over half a billion of people globally. Many of these people live in coastal regions of developing countries; and have limited capacity to adapt and build resilience in the face of climate change.  This research assesses the biophysical and socioeconomic characteristics of fishers in four coastal communities, Komenda, Elmina, Cape coast and Morree, in Ghana. Stru...
